Concordance

2004 24”x36” acrylic - For the Harmonic Concordance eclipse of November 8th, 2003. That week there were great fires in Southern California as the Sun released large flares towards the earth. On that day, private Lyndie England celebrated her birthday while on guard at Abu Graib prison, Baghdad. Her friends took some rather notorious pictures of her with Iraqi prisoners.

Dreaming of Death and Rebirth

2003 acrylic 4’x6’- Painted before the war in Iraq began. Shiva combines with Mayan diety, Ka’wil in the sky as a Jaguar warrior presents his captives to the Shaman-king. The title of the piece is written in Mayan Glyphs in the top right corner. The glyph 13Eagle symbolizes the transcendent nature of the War as a means of opening people to the coming Enlightenment.

Madre de Los Peyotes

2003 20”x24”acrylic. Created for a cactus art show at RockRose Gallery in Highland Park, LA. Owner Rosa Maria Marquez asked me to create something for the show and as I fell asleep that night this image popped in my head. The Peyote seems to have a nice symbiotic relationship with the cat’s claw bushes.

2003 acylic on particle board. The day I finished this some kids were having a hip-hop party at the RockRose gallery. Some girls pointed out a strange light moving across the sky….Suddenly the light blinked off and we all gasped! It faded back into sight and began going the other way!

Fox Percieves the Mothership

2003 acrlylic. This fox lived in my backyard when I lived in Altadena, CA. She would scavange the bread crumbs I left for the birds. The flowers grow in the springtime at Gorman, outside of LA.

Shimmering Earth

2002 4’x’6 acrylic. This was my first painting done in LA. The Buddha sits between two Mayan Shamans from Yaxchilan stelae. I had learned a Zen Yoga the same week I finished this and realized that is what the characters in this image are doing!

Mars and the Moon Goddess

(Sept.9, 2003) This was painted about the same time as “Madre de los Peyotes” after seeing the Full Moon near Mars when Mars was very close to the Earth. I first noticed the figure of the Moon goddess when I was on top of Enchanted Rock in the summer of 2000. There are similar depictions of her in the Dresden Codex and some Mayan pottery.

Bird Jaguar Man

2001 6’x18’ (Two 6’x9’ panels) Mixed. In honor of my grandfather George Llanes. The Shaman in the bird/jaguar mask wields the fish-shaped flint knife to cut off the head of the “Water-lily Jaguar”. The bat is the messenger of death.
